Can I Change My Workers' Comp Doctor in Illinois?

By Work Comp Chicago Editorial Staff · Published · Last reviewed

An injured worker in Illinois may choose two physicians. If you have already been seen by one doctor, tell the new provider who you have seen so they can explain how that applies to you before you are examined.

What to tell the new provider

The name of the doctor or clinic you have already seen, the dates, what was done, and whether you have imaging or a work status note from them. Bring any paperwork you were given.

What the first visit with a new provider covers

  • A history of the incident, your job duties and the care you have had so far
  • A physical examination of the injured area
  • A treatment plan written for your injury and the work you do
  • A work status note describing what you can and cannot do while you recover
  • Referrals for imaging or pain management when the provider finds they are needed

Records from your earlier care

With your written authorization, the new provider can request your records from the earlier doctor so the medical side of your file stays complete.
